SWIMMER’S PAVILLION

THIS IS SOMETHING TO BE LIVED

Our first project of third year was to design an off grid pavilion by Buttermere in the Lake District primarily for wild swimmers but also accessible for anyone. My concept was all about full immersion from the exterior cladding designed to match it’s surroundings to the interior playing on every one of the senses.

The ground floor, the location of the showers and storage, was inspired by the classic dry stone wall. Upon visiting a local quarry I had the chance to learn about different types of slate and the various finishes. On the ground floor I specified water jet Broughton Moor for the flooring while using scrap pieces as back bedded stone walls.

The second floor was inspired by the trees in the area. Stacks of logs ready for the log burner held in wire cages line the staircase, panels of pine line the walls and floors so the smell of wood envelopes you and large oak megaphones work to emphasise the sights and sounds of the lake. A large copper water tank lies to collect rainwater used for gravity fed showers Copper used for its antibacterial qualities.

The project was also heavily influenced by its environmental strategies from construction to use. Other than a couple log deliveries from a local sustainably grown forest each week, my design is completely self sustainable.
